 Reseach interests:

  • Investigation of wear behaviour of biological materials, particularly human dental enamel and composite/ceramic dental materials using electron microscopy techniques (FIB/SEM/TEM)
  • Modelling of wear processes
  • Characterisation of ceramic materials (for example, using FIB tomography)
  • Analytical and experimental work on machining

  • Research Fellow, School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering, The University of Sydney, 2003-2007 (Research included analytical and experimental work on the machining process and its optimisation, in particular, machining of hardened steels and metal matrix composites, investigation of constitutive equations, polishing of PCD compacts, hardening technology for steel materials and fabrication and characterisation of carbon nanotube reinforced ceramics. Some of the above work was collaborative research with the Australian industry. Also involved with supervising honours and postgraduate students)
  • ARC Australian Post-doctoral Fellow (APD) and Australian Research Fellow (ARF), School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, UNSW, 1995-2003 (Research included analytical and experimental work on the machining process and its optimisation, tool geometry optimisation and a comprehensive worldwide survey on available machining models. Also involved with supervising honours and postgraduate students and some undergraduate teaching in Manufacturing Technology)
  • Research Associate, School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, UNSW 1992-1994 (Research included modelling of the machining process, work-piece material behaviour and process optimisation).

 

RESEARCH

 

Research Contribution

Most significant contributions are in the field of wear of materials including human dental enamel, dental materials and cutting tool materials, and mechanics of machining. Areas of research include: experimental and analytical work involving wear and machining processes; fabrication and characterization of carbon nanotube reinforced ceramics; characterization of ceramic materials; process optimization and computer process monitoring. The above work includes has been published in 60+ papers in international journals and conferences, two patents and two book chapters.

  • The Best Paper Award at the 8th International Conference on Progress of Machining Technology (ICPMT), November 2006, Matsue, Japan (with Y. Chen and L. C. Zhang).
  • The 1992 Joseph Whitworth Prize of the Engineering Manufacturing Industries Division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, UK (with S. Hinduja and G. Barrow).
