Edward Lum

Adjunct Lecturer

Having completed both a Bachelor of Optometry (Hons) and a Bachelor of Industrial Design (Hons), Dr Lum was recently awarded his PhD at UNSW investigating changes in corneal innervation during orthokeratology lens wear. Dr Lum is a highly experienced optometrist, having worked in a number of private practices before commencing his postgraduate degree. He is also an experienced researcher, having worked at the Cooperative Research Centre for Eye Research and Technology (CRCERT) and the Research in Orthokeratology (ROK) Group. He is also committed to education, both in providing training through a position as Clinical Supervisor (1992-current), Guest Lecturer (1998-current), Teaching Fellow (2014), and Lecturer in the Optics of Contact Lens and Optical Instruments (2015-current) at UNSW.

Dr Lum’s past awards include the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), Orthokeratology Society of Oceania research scholarship, Cornea and Contact Lens Society of Australia research award, William C Ezell Fellowship, and most recently the Endeavour Research Fellowship. He has authored papers on topics such as soft toric contact lens performance, soft contact lens packaging solutions, instrumentation for measuring BVP on soft contact lenses, tear meniscus radius measurements, the influence of Dk/t on orthokeratology, and corneal sensitivity and nerve changes during orthokeratology. He recently completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the Murphy Laboratory of Experimental Optometry (MLEO), University of Waterloo, Canada involving in vitro and in situ soft contact lens dehydration investigations, and the design of novel techniques and instrumentation for assessing corneal sensitivity.
