Dean of Science Staff Awards

“The aim of the Staff Awards is to shine a light on the contribution of Science staff from across our diverse community. We have made the criteria for this year’s awards intentionally broad so that all staff can see their work reflected in at least one award category. I particularly encourage those who have never applied for a Staff Award to participate”

​INTRODUCTION 

The Dean of Science Staff Excellence Awards is an annual celebration that give us the opportunity to recognise the outstanding work being delivered by UNSW Science staff. All Science staff are strongly encouraged to nominate themselves and others in an award category.

THE AWARDS

In 2019, there are eight Staff Excellence Award categories. All awards are opened to both academic and professional staff. Each award accompanies a $2,000 prize. In the case of a team win, the prize will be divided evenly between the team members identified in the nomination form.

  • Dean of Science Stand Out Award – please note that there is no application process for this award. The recipient will be selected by the Dean.

ELIGIBILITY, NOMINATION PROCESS AND SCHEDULE

All members of the Faculty of Science are eligible to apply for an award except those who have received an award in the same or similar category within the last two years. If you plan to nominate someone for an award, please check with the applicant that they are happy to be nominated. You must also inform your Head of School or equivalent, of your intention to submit a nomination. There is no limit on the number of awards a person can apply for.

Nominations are submitted through the Staff Award Nomination Form.The Form asks for staff to include a statement making the case for the nominee receiving the award (using no more than 400 words). The Form needs to be submitted before midnight Monday, 23 September.

  • November 2019 - Award ceremony and celebration at Science Staff End of Year event.

EARLY CAREER EXCELLENCE AWARD

Award celebrates early career staff who have demonstrated excellence in their field. Early career staff are generally defined as academic staff who have been awarded their PhD within the last seven years (or equivalent), and professional staff up to Position Level Six. The award accommodates staff who have taken career breaks e.g. carers leave.

RESEARCH EXCELLENCE AWARD

Award celebrates staff who have made an outstanding contribution to the production and/or dissemination of research. Demonstrated activities may include excellence in publishing, research impact, technical support or researcher mentoring.

EDUCATION EXCELLENCE AWARD

Award celebrates staff that have made an outstanding contribution to student learning and/or the student experience. Demonstrated activities may include excellence in teaching, program development or student support.

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARD

Award celebrates staff who have made an outstanding contribution to UNSW Science through exceptional work performance in an operational role. Demonstrated activities may include excellence in the design or delivery of operational projects and processes.

COLLABORATION & PARTNERSHIP AWARD

Award celebrates staff who support collaboration between colleagues, university teams and/or external partners to achieve our strategic priorities. Demonstrated activities may include excellence in driving cross-university partnerships, team building initiatives or industry connections.

EQUITY, DIVERSITY & INCLUSION AWARD

Award celebrates staff who promote and bring to life our values and principles of equity, diversity and inclusion at UNSW Science and in the wider community. Demonstrated activities may include excellence in recruitment and retention efforts, student support or inclusion research.

COMMUNICATION IMPACT AWARD

Award celebrates staff who have demonstrated significant reach in promoting scientific findings or science more broadly. Demonstrated activities may include excellence in science communication or science outreach.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The Dean will consult with a Faculty panel to determine the winners of each award, except for the Dean of Science Stand Out Award. Award winners will be notified privately of their win in late October, and the awards will be presented at the UNSW Science End of Year Celebration. There is no limit on the number of awards a person may apply for.

Payment of the monetary component of the award will be arranged through Human Resources for recipients who choose to elect to have the award paid into their personal bank account (subject to taxation at their marginal rate). Should the winner/s request that the monetary component be paid into a School/Unit account, funds must be used for expenses related to the staff member’s role at UNSW and will be facilitated by the Faculty finance office.
