Honours: How to Apply

Prospective Honours students must nominate a particular area of science when applying for Honours. There are 11 areas to choose from:

  • Aviation
  • Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences
  • Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences
  • Chemistry
  • Maths and Statistics
  • Materials Science
  • Medical Science
  • Neuroscience
  • Physics (Term 1 and Term 3 intake only)
  • Psychology (Term 1 intake only)
  • Optometry & Vision Science

 

More information on these areas can be found here. Each area has their own special application and entry requirements. It is imperative that you understand the special terms before applying. Failure to follow the requirements of your nominated Honours area may result in your application being declined.

Note: If you wish to apply for more than one Honours area in the Science Faculty, you must complete separate applications for each nominated area.

Term 3 2019

Term 1 2020
 
Applications for Term 1 2020 are now open. Please read the instructions below on how to apply.
 
Deadline for T1 2020 applications is 5pm Friday 8th November.
 
Term 2 2020
 
Applications for Term 2 2020 will open from Friday 10th January 2020.
 
Deadline for Term 2 2020 applications is 5pm Friday 20th March 2020.
 
Note: in most cases, applications will not be assessed until after the application period has closed.
 

 

There are three or four steps involved in the application process, depending on your category: 

     
 

CATEGORY A

Internal UNSW applicants in three-year undergraduate programs; all external applicants1.

   
     
   
 

Step 1:

Attend Honours information events for the Schools/areas you are interested in applying for. Decide which Honours area you would like to apply for.  

 

Step 2:

Continue to consult with the School that offers Honours in your chosen area. Some Schools allocate students to Honours projects, other Schools require students to arrange their own projects. Review the application requirements of your nominated area at: www.science.unsw.edu.au/honours

 

Step 3:

Complete “Intention to Undertake Honours” form2.

 

Step 4: 

Submit formal application for the program 4500 Science (Honours) via “Apply Onlinehttps://applyonline.unsw.edu.au/login3,4.

 

Note 1: Psychology applicants do not need to fill out the intention to undertake honours form. You should instead fill out the 4518 Psychological Science Honours application. Please click here for more information.
Note 2: All Medical Science students must fill out this form and attach to the Intention to Undertake Honours form.
Note 3: Students applying for Psychology Honours must apply for the program 4518, not 4500. 
Note 4: You will be asked to upload a copy of the "Intention to Undertake Honours" form with your 4500 application.
 
   

 

     
 

CATEGORY B

Internal UNSW students in “embedded” programs (Honours is a compulsory part of the program).

   
     
   
 

Step 1:

Attend Honours information events for the Schools/areas you are interested in applying for. Decide which Honours area you would like to apply for.  

 

Step 2:

Step 3:

Complete “Intention to Undertake Honours” form. (Medical Science applicants, see note 1)
