Policy specialists are sometimes called policy workers, policy advisors, policy consultants, policy analysts or policy officers.
Policy specialists investigate a particular field or discipline, analysing data and advising policymakers. They operate in advisory roles and are concerned with the guiding rules and principles of government. They conduct research, analyse proposed policies, evaluate the effects of existing policies, and report their findings to government officials and members of the public. Some policy workers conduct cost-benefit analyses of existing policies to assess whether a program's outcomes outweighed the expenses or if the program cost more than anticipated.
The key focus of a policy worker is reviewing, developing, and implementing policies and strategies for their assigned field or discipline. As such, many policy workers specialise in a certain area, like technology or medicine.
The analytical and communication skills acquired on this job are highly transferable across both private and public sector – and potentially lucrative.
