Pure Mathematics

Pure Mathematics is the study of the essential structures of mathematics, concerned with problems and techniques which transcend specific applications.

Work by pure mathematicians underpins most of the technological advances of this century.

Please note: as an undergraduate major, Pure Mathematics is only available within the Advanced Mathematics degree, or one of the dual degrees with Advanced Mathematics.

Research in Pure Mathematics focuses on the development of existing theories or the creation of new ones, may be driven by applications or by the internal demands of the discipline.

Research Areas in Pure Mathematics include:

Algebra and Number Theory

Functional and Harmonic Analysis

Mathematical Physics

Bachelor of Science (Advanced Mathematics)
The Advanced Mathematics program is aimed at high achieving students who wish to specialise in mathematics as a basis for the increasing range of quantitative careers in areas such as finance, environmental modelling and research.
