 What is academic advising?

Personalised academic advice is provided based on all available program options in favour of your earliest possible graduation date.

This confidential 30-minute session provides the following advice to students who are, have been or may be affected by mitigating circumstances:

  • any factor that affected your academic performance
  • progression
  • enrolment
  • repeated fails and/or failed pre-requisites
  • maximum time to complete
  • advice navigating your program structure
  • specialised support services within UNSW for additional help to stay on track

You do not need to prepare anything for a meeting.

You will receive a short survey via email to provide your academic advisor with more information prior to the meeting.

 My academic standing is... Good

If your academic standing is Good, UNSW has no concerns about your progress.

If you would like any assistance with your program structure, progression, major selection or enrolment, you can contact the Science Student Centre by submitting an online enquiry, calling us on 02 9385 6125 or coming in person to Room 128, Robert Webster Building.

 My academic standing is... Referral

If your academic standing is Referral, it means that UNSW is concerned about your progress. We would recommend that you make an appointment with an Academic Advisor if you would like advice on degree progression or further information on the additional support services available for students at UNSW to help you get back on track.

 My academic standing is... Probation

If your academic standing is Probation, it means that UNSW is very concerned about your progress and a block has been placed on your enrolment. We strongly advise you book a meeting with an academic advisor to discuss your circumstances, review all academic options and ensure that you are accessing all the right support.

My academic standing is… Provisional Suspension/Provisional Exclusion

If your academic standing is Provisional Suspension or Provisional Exclusion, it means that UNSW is very concerned about your progress and a block has been placed on your enrolment. We strongly advise you book a meeting with an academic advisor to discuss your circumstances, review all academic options and ensure that you are accessing all the right support.

 My academic standing is... Suspension

If your academic standing is Suspension, UNSW is extremely concerned and believes that a break from your studies is required. If you wish to appeal against Suspension, please follow the guidelines in How to Appeal your Academic Standing of Suspension or Exclusion"If you would like further advice on this, you can make an appointment with an Academic Advisor by clicking here.

 My academic standing is... Exclusion

If your academic standing is Exclusion, UNSW has serious concerns about your ability to complete your program. You will be excluded from the University for not less than 2 academic years and you must re-apply for re-admission at the end of the exclusion period. If you wish to appeal against Exclusion, please follow the guidelines in How to Appeal your Academic Standing of Suspension or Exclusion". If you would like further advice on this, you can make an appointment with an Academic Advisor by clicking here.

 Returning from Suspension

If you are returning from Suspension, you will need to book an appointment an academic advisor to discuss how your circumstances have changed since the last time you were enrolled and to remove the block on your enrolment. We recommend that you do so before the start of term so that you can enrol in time and start attending classes from the beginning of Week 1.
