Siemens Science Experience

The 2008 Siemens Science Experience is shaping up to be another exciting event! Ninety-six Year 9 students from New South Wales and ACT have registered to attend the event from Wednesday 1st to Friday 3rd October. We welcome all students to UNSW and especially those who will be travelling from country schools - one student is travelling all the way from Kyogle.

This year many new and exciting activities have been added to the timetable. Participants will get a taste of university life as well as meet and learn from scientists who are experts in their fields.

The new National Director of the Siemens Science Experience, Ms Jacqueline Bellars, will also attend and sit in on some of the sessions.

From Central Station Eddy Avenue Bus Stop : take Bus 891. This is UNSW Express and stops at Gates 2, 8 & 9 on High Street. Please note this service is pre-paid only.

If driving, check directions to our campus from your suburb.

Also check the Sydney Buses website and the 131500 website for other timetable information.

The campus map shows the easiest entry points for each day of the event: Kensington TSSE map.pdf.

4.What time do I arrive and leave each day?

The times are as follows:

Wednesday 1st October:8.00 am - 4.30 pm
Thursday 2nd October:8.30 am - 6.30 pm (dinner provided)
Friday 3rd October:8.30 am - 5.00 pm (presentation)

If you arrive late on any day, please stay at the designated area and call Prem on 0403 438 566 and you will be collected and taken to your scheduled session for that time.

6.What if I need to leave early?

A roll-call is taken each day before we start any activity. We need to know where you are at all times as you are our responsibility while you are on campus. If you need to leave early speak to your group leader on the morning you need to leave. You should also bring a note from your parent or guardian and hand over to your group leader.

NOTE: Students are not permitted to leave the campus grounds at any time and especially during lunch breaks.

7.What should I wear?
As you will spend some time in laboratories, it is important that you wear suitable clothing - preferably a long-sleeved cotton shirt, jeans and closed-toed shoes. Check your copy of the timetable and dress accordingly - dress for comfort. Pack a cardigan, jacket or jumper just in case the day suddenly turns cold.

8.What should I bring?

  • Notepad
  • Pen
  • Bottle of water
  • Umbrella (in case it rains)
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Money (for bus/train fare if using public transport, phone call etc)

You may wish to bring a camera but please keep taking pictures with a flash to the minimum so as not to disturb others.

If you bring your mobile phone with you, make sure it is turned off while activities are in session.

When you arrive on the first day, you will be given a program satchel.

9.Lunch
Please bring lunch everyday. There are food outlets on campus but it can prove very time-consuming and expensive. Fruit, water and juice/soft drinks will be provided on all three days. (On Thursday 2nd you will be attending a TSSE Event dinner - your special dietary requirements have been noted and will be catered for accordingly).

10.What do I do if I get lost on campus?

If you somehow find you are lost on campus, ask anyone for directions to the building where you are supposed to be. There are information maps all over the campus and security on patrol all through the day and night.

You can call Prem on 9385 7311 or 0403 438 566. Team leaders will also provide you with contact numbers to use in an emergency.

Siemens Science Experience 2007

A very successful Siemens Science Experience was run, once again, by the Faculty of Science in late September 2007 with 90 Year 9 students from NSW and ACT schools attending the event.

The Dean of Science, Professor Michael Archer, welcomed the students and YSA members to the University and the program. The Regional General Manager of Siemens NSW, Mr John Chapman, briefly spoke about his organisation and the opportunities it provides young science graduates.

A diverse range of activities (lectures, workshops, labs, excursions etc in different science disciplines) was organised for the participants. There were more interactive activities organised for this age group to keep them focused on the task at hand. This way the participants not only gained knowledge but also had fun in the process.

On the final day participants were presented with attendance certificates and special awards presented by the Young Scientists of Australia.
