Fundamental to the University’s continued improvement in the quality of teaching, courses, and programs is the CATEI process. In previous years, this evaluation has been included in the Learning and Teaching Performance Indicators. Over the course of one year, each staff member who holds a teaching role is expected to undertake at least one teaching evaluation. Staff will also be expected to provide evidence of critical reflection on their teaching when compiling a teaching portfolio for promotion, grants, and awards.
CATEI is coordinated through IARO (Institutional Analysis and Reporting Office), and is supported through the Learning and Teaching @UNSW in three ways; assisting staff with interpreting CATEI data, offering strategies to adopt in response to student feedback, and providing additional resources and references to compliment the CATEI Process.
A full description of the CATEI process at UNSW can be found at the UNSW Learning and Teaching web site: For further information head to http://teaching.unsw.edu.au/catei
Science Specific CATEI Forms
The Faculty of Science's has developed Science specific CATEI forms to enable consistency in the reporting process across the Faculty. Schools are requested to utilise the following forms when reporting on CATEI:
The information collected from these reports is used to inform the Dean and Associate Dean (Education) on the learning and teaching experiences of our students and produce Faculty and School CATEI summaries and report on the Faculty's performance in the Learning and Teaching Performance Indicators.

*HOS are asked to report on the Teaching evaluations they have received from (and discussed with) individual teachers in that session. According to the EBA and CATEI, teachers are required to be evaluated on their teaching (and to meet with their supervisor/HOS) at least once per year
Details
Overview
- Courses (Form A) are to be evaluated at least every 2nd running of the course (assuming it is offered every year).
- Teachers (Form B - D) are to be evaluated for at least one course at least once a year (teachers nominate the course from which their teaching is to be evaluated in consultation with their Head of School (HOS)).
- The forms are designed to give a very broad overview of the teaching within UNSW and courses/teachers may well have to be further evaluated by the school.
- Teachers should have the opportunity to meet with HOS to discuss teaching issues (probably integrated with the Career Development Scheme annual meeting).
Specifics
- Either Online or Paper-based forms (A-D) can be used. Course evaluations (Form A) are normally carried in weeks 11 or 12 or as near as practicable. Teacher evaluations (Forms B-D) may be carried as appropriate.
- CATEI Course (Form A) and Teaching Evaluations (Forms B-D) are to be administered by the school/department CATEI coordinator and definitely NOT by the teachers (for that course) themselves (there is the option to use Student Course Committees).
- Administration of CATEI within each school involves:
- For Online Evaluation
- Scheduling the CATEI evaluations on the IARO CATEI portal (accessible from myUNSW - https://my.unsw.edu.au/).
- For Paper-based evaluation
- Scheduling the CATEI evaluations on the IARO CATEI portal (accessible from myUNSW - https://my.unsw.edu.au/).
- Printing sufficient numbers of the CATEI evaluation forms for that teacher/course evaluation.
- Distribution to and collection (of the CATEI forms) from the students.
- Sealing (of the CATEI forms) in an envelope and delivery to IARO (Attn: Paul Scimone)
- For Online Evaluation
- Form A:
- Data summaries and written comments on the course evaluation will be made available (via the IARO CATEI website) only to the course convenor.
- Data summaries (only) will be available to the School CATEI coordinator, the relevant HOS and the Faculty CATEI coordinator.
- Forms B, C & D:
- Data summaries and written comments on the teaching evaluation will be made available to the individual teacher (only
School Coordinators for CATEI
The school level CATEI coordinators (shown in Table 1 below) have been registered in the Online CATEI system (by the Faculty CATEI coordinator). These people are responsible for scheduling the CATEI evaluations (for the school) and printing the Paper-based versions if required. Below is a list of the School CATEI coordinators for the Faculty of Science.
