Celebrating excellence: 2009 Faculty of Science Undergraduate Scholarships & Prizes

Student learner Winners are grinners

The 2009 Faculty of Science Undergraduate Scholarships & Prizes presentation evening marked an opportunity to recognise and reward students for their outstanding academic performances.

Students, parents, sponsors, industry representatives and members of the Science Faculty executive attended the gala evening in the Tyree Room of the Scientia Building to celebrate the awarding of more than 80 prizes and scholarships.

Dean of Science Professor Mike Archer commended the students on their performances and thanked donors, sponsors and industry partners for their generous support. "These scholarships can make a world of difference to the student experience," Professor Archer noted. "They don't just make life easier but help to enrich the education of some of our best and brightest young minds in science. They are a vital investment in the Australians of tomorrow and we thank you profusely for your support."

Representatives from industry and award-sponsor organisations who attended the evening were: Dr Cathy Foley, CSIRO, Mr Roger Leigh, Cochlear, Mr James Enoch, SAS Institute, Mr Nick Gorga, Silicon Graphics, Mr Michael Cocks, Silicon Graphics, Mr Jim Douglas, Alma Douglas Scholarship and Mr Mark England, Australian Psychological Society.

The Faculty of Science provides numerous scholarships in partnership with reputed industries and organisations for undergraduate students taking degrees with specific Faculty Schools. Scientia Professor Veena Sahajwalla, Associate Dean for Strategic Industry Relations said "These industry partnership scholarships aim to provide incentives for attracting the best and brightest students to undertake science programs. In turn, these scholarships provide opportunities for our high quality graduates to work in these industries."

The Faculty's current list of industry partners includes: OneSteel, Rio Tinto, AngloCoal, CSIRO, ANSTO, Weir Minerals, Xstrata Coal, Cochlear, LaserBond, CCI Pope, BHP Billiton NTC, SAS, Sandvik Steel, Bridges Institutional Broking. Industry scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and performance in interviews.
