Honours: How to Apply

Prospective Honours students must nominate a particular area of science when applying for Honours. There are 11 areas to choose from:

  • Aviation
  • Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences
  • Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences
  • Chemistry
  • Maths and Statistics
  • Materials Science
  • Medical Science
  • Neuroscience
  • Physics (Term 1 and Term 3 intake only)
  • Psychology (Term 1 intake only)
  • Vision Science

 

More information on these areas can be found here. Each area has their own special application and entry requirements. It is imperative that you understand the special terms before applying. Failure to follow the requirements of your nominated Honours area may result in your application being declined.

Note: If you wish to apply for more than one Honours area in the Science Faculty, you must complete separate applications for each nominated area.

 

Term 1 applications have now closed. Offers will be sent out after release of results for semester 2 and before the start of Term 1 2019.

 

Term 2 2019

Not available for Psychology or Physics Honours

Applications open from Monday 7th January 2019

Deadline for Term 2 applications is 5pm Friday 12th April 2019

 

Term 3 2019

Not available for Psychology Honours 

Applications open from Friday 17th May 2019
 
Deadline for Term 3 applications is 5pm Friday 26th July 2019
 

There are three or four steps involved in the application process, depending on your category: 

     
 

CATEGORY A

Internal UNSW applicants in three-year undergraduate programs; all external applicants.

   
     
   
 

Step 1:

Attend Honours information events for the Schools/areas you are interested in applying for. Decide which Honours area you would like to apply for.  

 

Step 2:

Continue to consult with the School that offers Honours in your chosen area. Some Schools allocate students to Honours projects, other Schools require students to arrange their own projects. Review the application requirements of your nominated area at: www.science.unsw.edu.au/honours

 

Step 3:

Complete “Intention to Undertake Honours” form. (External students see note 1)

 

Step 4: 

Submit formal application for the program 4500 Science (Honours) via “Apply Onlinehttps://applyonline.unsw.edu.au/login

 

Note 1: External (non-UNSW) students applying for Psychology Honours are not required to complete the "Intention to Undertake Honours" form. 
Note 2: Students applying for Psychology Honours must apply for the program 4518, not 4500. Please click here for more information.
Note 3: You will be asked to upload a copy of the "Intention to Undertake Honours" form with your 4500 application.
 
   

 

     
 

CATEGORY B

Internal UNSW students in “embedded” programs (Honours is a compulsory part of the program).

   
     
   
 

Step 1:

Attend Honours information events for the Schools/areas you are interested in applying for. Decide which Honours area you would like to apply for.  

 

Step 2:

Continue to consult with the School that offers Honours in your chosen area. Some Schools allocate students to Honours projects, other Schools require students to arrange their own projects. Review the application requirements of your nominated area at: www.science.unsw.edu.au/honours

 

Step 3:

Complete “Intention to Undertake Honours” form.
