If you are looking for an opportunity for basic training in research in mathematics or statistics, the MSc degree may be the right choice for you.

MSc research students are given an individual research topic and carry out research on the topic under the personal supervision of a member of staff of the School of Mathematics and Statistics. When the research is completed, the student’s thesis is submitted for examination by international experts in the field. Details of the research areas which are presently available in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, as well as recent research theses, are available on the School’s website.

The MSc degree usually requires at least two years of full-time study (35-40 hours per week, 48 weeks per year). Part-time MSc candidature is encouraged, but only for candidates who can spend at least 20 hours per week on their research and are able to maintain regular contact with the University.

An applicant whose academic qualifications are satisfactory, but whose background is not fully appropriate to the proposed research topic, may be required to attend formal lecture courses in relevant subjects.
