Merlin Crossley completed his BSc degree at the University of Melbourne, majoring in genetics and microbiology. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and following a post-doctoral period at Oxford University took a research position at Harvard Medical School. He later joined the University of Sydney and established a laboratory investigating DNA-binding molecules and gene control. He was Professor of Molecular Genetics and served as Sydney's Acting Dean of Science throughout 2004, then as the Director of Research in the University's College of Sciences and Technology. From 2006 to the end of 2008 he was Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research. His awards include the Australian Academy of Science's Gottschalk Medal, the Royal Society of NSW's Edgeworth David Medal, and the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology's Roche Medal. He joined UNSW as Dean of Science in January 2010.

Professor Peter Lovibond

Peter Lovibond is an experimental and clinical psychologist who studies human learning and anxiety, with a focus on high-level cognitive processes.  He also works on the nature and measurement of depression and anxiety.  From 2002-2008 he was Head of the School of Psychology at UNSW.  He is a past President of the Australian Association for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, serves on the Editorial Boards of several international journals in behavioural neuroscience and psychopathology, and is currently a member of the Social, Behavioural and Economic Sciences panel of the Australian Research Council.

Paul is the chair principal for Faculty committees and formally represents the Faculty on the Academic Board. Paul is responsible for managing special projects relating to academic planning and development of the Faculty of Science and UNSW.

 

 

Professor Mark Hoffman

Mark Hoffman is responsible for the strategic management of research in the Faculty. He is a material scientist and engineer, specialising in the design of materials for structural and functional reliability and integrity. His research is linked with a range of industries including construction, automotive and biomedical devices. He is a program leader for the ARC Centre of Excellence for Design in Light Metals and a Director of the International Fracture Congress. He has twice received the UNSW Vice-Chancellor's Teaching Award; for team undergraduate teaching and postgraduate supervision. He has held visiting positions in the USA, Japan, Germany and India. He is currently also Head of the School of Materials Science & Engineering.

 

 

Dr Gavin Edwards

Gavin is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Chemistry and Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs) in the Faculty of Science at UNSW. He is responsible for all academic matters relating to student recruitment, admissions and progression. Gavin’s research covers a range of areas, from medicinal chemistry to organic synthetic methodology.

Julian Cox joins the faculty from a background of microbiology and food science, with extensive and award-winning teaching experience in food microbiology, quality assurance, rapid methods, and graduate attributes. His research activities focus on rapid methods, for the detection and characterisation of microorganisms associated with foods, the biology, ecology and management of foodborne pathogens and food safety systems. He is also involved in the development and application of technology, especially computers, in teaching, and study of higher education.

Veena leads research in Sustainable Materials Processing at UNSW and is Director of the Centre for Sustainable Materials Research and Technology. She has received many awards and recognition for her innovations in the use of recycled waste plastics in steel making, including the 2006 Environmental Technology Award from the US Association of Iron and Steel Technology, and is passionate about science and engineering as a career path. Veena actively communicates her ideas to the public, especially through her position as a judge on the ABC TV "The New Inventors". She has been stunningly successful in research commercialisation and is responsible for strategic relations with industry for the Faculty.

Maryam Khajeh completed a Bachelor of Computer Engineering (Hons.) and Masters of Biomedical Engineering at UNSW. Whilst completing her engineering degrees, Maryam also undertook a Diploma of Innovation Management. From that, she developed an interest in technology commercialisation and attained some experience with a start-up Biotechnology company, before launching a career as a Patent Attorney. She trained and worked as a Patent Attorney for Davies Collison Cave (DCC) for over six years, and completed a Masters in Industrial Property (law). Her position at DCC included patent drafting, prosecution, and infringement and validity analysis of patents for both local and overseas clients. Maryam came back to UNSW as the Commercialisation Manger for the Faculty of Science, working at NSi in 2010. She is also the 2011 President of Engineers Australia, Sydney Division.

Bob Beale

Bob's professional background is in mass media, mainly as a writer specialising in science, medicine, environment and technology. He graduated in Communications from Mitchell CAE (now Charles Sturt University) in 1979. He is also a freelance writer and is the author of five non-fiction books on science and environmental themes.

Bob is responsible for strategic advice and planning on all matters relating to the faculty's public profile and media relations.

Emma was born in Poole, Dorset, England and migrated to Australia in 1973. She has dual nationality (British/Australian) and an incurable desire to travel to places she has not been to before. This desire is usually increased with each period of annual leave. Emma's most recent professional experience is academic segment manager in legal publishing.

Trichelle has had a long association with UNSW both as a student and within student administration at a school, central, and now faculty level. She is a member of the Science Student Centre team working closely with the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs). Apart from a passion for helping students, she loves travelling, enjoying good food and wine with friends, reading, movies, and learning foreign languages.

Rachelle is a member of the marketing team and is responsible for the recruitment of undergraduate students at domestic level, with an emphasis on secondary school marketing, alumni and stakeholder relations. She is the project manager for faculty's collaboration with the Science Teachers Association of NSW. Rachelle also manages selected UNSW events and coordinates the production of faculty publications and other marketing material.

Renee successfully coordinates many key activities in the undergraduate recruitment strategy, to engage prospective students with UNSW Science.  Renee works closely with staff in the nine Science schools and is responsible for projects including event management, print and electronic publications, and coordination of the student ambassador team.
