Settling In

Your first weeks at university can be daunting. Our job is to help make the transition as smooth as possible so you can focus on the business of making friends and settling into a study routine. We don’t expect you to do it alone.

The UNSW Faculty of Science runs a Peer Mentoring Program for newcomers who have just finished high school. Science students enrolled in second year or above are trained as mentors to provide you with non-academic support. Your mentor will offer guidance, advice and valuable first-hand insight into life as a science student at UNSW - whether it’s finding a great place to eat, locating your nearest carpark or booking a study lab. Their job is to help you feel comfortable and confident as you embark on one of the most exciting phases of your life.

Arc runs a packed program of events attracting thousands of students from across NSW each year including O-Week, live Triple J national broadcasts, Foundation Day, Oktoberfest and International Festival, Artsweek and semester parties. While we’re renowned for hosting some of the country’s best live gigs, Arc is more than entertainment. We are your one-stop-shop for student services and support, where you’ll find everything from discount vouchers and legal support to career advice.

We also have more than 130 clubs and societies for students with interests ranging from cheerleading, comedy, film and yoga to debating, politics, sports and circus. If you’re interested in giving back to the community, Arc can get you started. We run volunteer programs that include teaching in outback schools, promoting campus events and creating podcasts. Volunteering is a great way to help your community and make new friends while developing skills that will impress prospective employers.
