By entering the UNSW Science 50:50 2015 New Innovators Competition (the Competition), you agree to the following terms and conditions:


1. Competition Organiser

The organiser of the Competition is the University of New South Wales ABN 57 195 873 179 of Kensington, NSW 2052 (UNSW Australia).


2.         Who can enter

2.1       Entry is open to female Year 12 students who are enrolled in an Australian high school during the entirety of the period from Monday 18 May 2015 to Wednesday 30 September 2015 (Participants).

2.2.      If a Participant is under the age of 18 years at the time the Participant submits her entry, the Participant’s parent or guardian must authorise the Participant’s entry into the Competition, by completing the Parental Consent Form (which can be downloaded from http://www.science.unsw.edu.au/50-50/competition) (the Competition webpage). The completed Parental Consent Form must be uploaded to the Competition entry form (which can be accessed at http://www.science.unsw.edu.au/50-50/competition along with the Participant’s entry.

2.3       Employees of UNSW Australia and their immediate family members are ineligible to enter. “Employees” refers to full-time and part-time employees, employed on either a permanent or casual basis. “Immediate family members” refers to children and siblings of the UNSW Australia employee.


3.         Competition Theme

The theme of the Competition is “Innovative Ideas”, and the purpose of the Competition is to encourage young women who are currently completing their Year 12 studies in an Australian high school to share their ideas for scientific and/or technological solutions to real world problems by preparing and submitting their idea in the form of any one of the following: a short video, essay, image,poster or website.


4.         How to Enter

4.1       The Competition commences at 5.00pm AEST on Monday 18 May 2015 and closes at 11.59pm AEST on Wednesday 30 September 2015 (Competition Period).

4.2       Participants must comply with these Terms and Conditions to be eligible to win a prize. 

4.3         To enter the Competition, Participants must, during the Competition Period:

(a)        specify their full name, age, school at which they are enrolled, phone number and personal email address on the Competition entry form (which can be accessed at the Competition Webpage) (Competition entry form);

(b)        create an entry which describes the Participant’s idea for a scientific and/or technological solution to a real world problem. That entry may be in one only of the following forms:

i.        a short video. The video must be between 1 to 4 minutes in duration, and the electronic file containing the video must not exceed 100MB in size (or, if it exceeds 100MB, it can be uploaded to a file-sharing portal like YouTube or Vimeo, and the link to that video should be specified in the ‘External Link’ field in the Competition entry form);

ii.        an essay, not exceeding 1000 words. A Participant may, but is not required to, submit an accompanying image with her essay if she so chooses. The electronic file containing the image must not exceed 100MB in size;

iii.        an image.The electronic file containing the image must not exceed 100MB in size. A Participant may, but is not required to, submit an accompanying description with her image if she so chooses;

iv.        a poster. The electronic file containing the poster must not exceed 100MB in size. A Participant may, but is not required to, submit an accompanying description with her poster if she so chooses.or

v.        a website. If a Participant submits a website as her entry, she should include the link to that website in the ‘External Link’ field on the Competition entry form.

(c)        upload a file (or files as appropriate) containing her entry to, or specify a link to her entry on, the Competition entry form;

(d)        if a Participant is under 18 years of age at the time she submits her entry, the Participant’s parent or guardian must authorise the Participant’s entry into the Competition, by completing and signing the Parental Consent Form which can be downloaded from  the Competition Webpage. The Participant must upload the completed and signed Parental Consent Form to the Competition entry form or post it to the address set out in paragraph 11 below so that it is received by Thursday 1st October 2015.

(e)        if a person other than the Participant  is identified or identifiable in, or from the Participant’s entry, either through the inclusion of their name, voice, likeness, appearance or other identifying information in the entry, the Participant must obtain from each such identified or identifiable person, a completed and signed Appearance Release Form (which can be downloaded from the Competition Webpage at http://www.science.unsw.edu.au/50-50/competition). If the identified or identifiable person is under the age of 18 years, the parental/guardian consent section of the Appearance Release Form must also be signed by that person’s parent or guardian. The Participant must upload each completed and signed Appearance Release Form on the Competition entry form or post them to the contact address set out in paragraph 11 below so that it is received by Thursday 1st October 2015.  If no person other than the Participant is identified or identifiable in the entry, it is not necessary to complete an Appearance Release Form. If an entry includes any identified or identifiable persons for whom a correctly completed Appearance Release form is not provided to UNSW Australia in accordance with these Terms and Conditions, the entry will be invalid.

4.4          An entry must be received on the Competition entry form by 11:59pm AEST on Wednesday 30 September 2015.   

4.5          A Participant may submit a maximum of one (1) entry.

4.6          A Participant’s entry may not be entered, or have been entered, in any other competition run by UNSW Australia or any other organisation.

4.7          Entries which are considered by UNSW Australia to be offensive or otherwise inappropriate, defamatory, racist or otherwise unlawful will be deemed invalid and will be excluded from the Competition. In addition, entries that are not received during the Competition Period or that do not comply with these Terms and Conditions, will not be valid entries and will be excluded.

4.8          UNSW Australia reserves the right at any time, to verify the eligibility of Participants and the validity of entries, and to disqualify any Participant who does not meet the eligibility criteria in clause 2 of these Terms and Conditions, or who submits an entry that is not in accordance with these Terms and Conditions. All UNSW Australia’s decisions about the eligibility of entrants and validity of entries will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.


5.       How to win and prize details

5.1       This is a competition based on skill and merit, and chance plays no part in determining the winner.

The prizes and conditions that must be met to receive a prize

5.2       There will be five prize winners, who will win one (1) prize each. The prize for each winning entry is:.

(a)        subject to clause 5.3 and 5.13 of these Terms and Conditions, a payment of up to four thousand dollars ($4000); and

(b)        if a winner is enrolled in a full-time Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) degree at UNSW Australia as at 31st March 2016, entry into the UNSW Science 50:50 program.  Under this program, the winners would be offered mentoring by a representative from one or more of UNSW Australia’s “UNSW Science 50:50 Program Partners” as well as industry networking and workplace immersion experience opportunities with at least one of the “UNSW Science 50:50 Program Partners”.  Examples of ‘workplace immersion’ experiences that may be offered to the winners (and runners-up) include a tour of a scientific or technological facility operated by a UNSW Science 50:50 Program Partner, or a period of time spent ‘shadowing’ an employee of one of those Program Partners.    

5.3       The prize of up to four thousand dollars ($4000) will be paid to each of the five winners in the following instalments, at the specified times, if they meet the following conditions:

(a)        $2000 in April 2016, if the winner:

i.        achieves a university entrance score of at least 80 in the 2015 Senior Secondary Certificate of Education examinations in her state or territory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senior_Secondary_Certificate_of_Education); and

ii.        as at 31 March 2016, is enrolled as a full time  student in a STEM degree at an Australian university; and

(b)        $2000 in April 2017, if the winner:

i.        completes her first year of university in “good standing” after completing a full-time load in both semesters one and two of the academic year. “Good standing” means that the winner must achieve a “pass” mark or higher, as the final result, in more than half of the subjects which she enrols in for each semester; and

ii.        as at 31 March 2017, is enrolled as a full time student in a STEM degree at an Australian university.

Provision of information to UNSW Australia to claim prize

5.4       So that UNSW Australia may confirm that a winner has met the conditions set out in clause 5.3 of these Terms and Conditions, each winner agrees to provide the following information and documents to UNSW Australia as follows:

(a)        on or before 15th April 2016:

i.        a copy of original correspondence from the relevant state or territory university admission centre  to the Participant informing her of her University entrance score, so that UNSW may verify that she received a score of at least 80 in the 2015 Senior Secondary Certificate of Education examinations in her state or territory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senior_Secondary_Certificate_of_Education; and

ii.        a copy of original correspondence from an Australian university confirming the winner’s enrolment as a student of that university into the first year of a full-time STEM degree.

(b)        on or before 14th April 2017:

 i.        a copy of the winner’s official academic transcript showing academic performance in the first year of university; and

 ii.        a copy of original correspondence from an Australian university confirming the winner’s enrolment as a student of that university into the second year of a full-time STEM degree.

5.5       If a winner enrols at an Australian university other than UNSW Australia, UNSW Australia will transfer the prize moneys to the appropriate office of that other Australian university, which will be responsible for transferring the prize moneys to the winner, subject to her meeting the conditions set out in clauses 5.3 and 5.4 of these Terms and Conditions.

5.6       UNSW Australia reserves the right to make its own independent enquiries to verify the information it receives from a winner under clause 5.4 of these Terms and Conditions. Each winner authorises UNSW Australia to make enquiries of, and obtain information from, the relevant state or territory universities admission centre and any educational institution at which the winner is previously or currently enrolled, so that UNSW Australia may verify the information provided by the winner to UNSW Australia, under clause 5.4 of these Terms and Conditions.

5.7       Where UNSW Australia decides that a winner has failed to satisfy the conditions set out in clause 5.3 of these Terms and Conditions (or either of them), the winner will not be eligible to receive their prize, or, as applicable, the second instalment of their prize. UNSW Australia’s decisions about the eligibility of winners to receive their prize (or second instalment of their prize, as applicable) will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Five “Runners-up”

5.8       There will also be five “runners-up” who are judged by the judging panel as having submitted the next 5 best entries. If those runners-up are enrolled in a full-time STEM degree at UNSW Australia as at 31st March 2016, those runners-up will also be offered entry into the “UNSW Science 50:50 program” with access to the same benefits and opportunities described in clause 5.2(b) of these Terms and Conditions. If a winner becomes ineligible to receive a monetary prize, the runner-up judged to have submitted the next best entry, will become eligible to receive a monetary prize, provided that the runner-up satisfies and agrees to the conditions set out in these Terms and Conditions (in particular clauses 5.2 to 5.7 (inclusive) and clause 5.14).  

The judging panel and judging criteria

5.9       The five winning entries and five runners-up will be selected by a panel of judges comprised of:

(a)        the Dean of the Faculty of Science at UNSW Australia, or other UNSW Australia representative as chosen by UNSW Australia;

(b)        Professor Veena Sahajwalla of UNSW Australia, or other UNSW Australia representative, as chosen by UNSW Australia; and

(c)        Four leading research and development representatives from  one or more of UNSW Australia’s “50:50 Program Partners” named on the UNSW Science 50:50 website at http://www.science.unsw.edu.au/50-50/partners.

5.10     The judging panel will review all valid entries and select the five winning entries and five runners-up based on the following criteria:

(a)        clear communication;

(b)        creativity;

(c)        feasibility;

(d)        innovation; and

(e)        originality.

5.11     The judging panel’s decision on the five winners and five runners-up is final and correspondence will not be entered into.

Announcement and notification of winners and runners-up

5.12     The five winners and five runners-up will be announced by 5pm AEST on Friday 30th October 2015 on the UNSW Australia Faculty of Science website at http://www.science.unsw.edu.au/50-50.  Each announcement will state the winner’s or runner-up’s name and high school (as specified by the Participant when she completed the Competition entry form) and will publish a copy of her entry (in whole, or in part). Each Participant agrees, if she is one of the winners or runners-up of the Competition, to UNSW Australia making and publishing such announcements which name her as the winner or runner-up, state her school, and publish a copy of her entry (in whole, or in part).

5.13     By 5pm AEST on Friday 30th October 2015, UNSW Australia will contact each of the five winners and inform that them that their entry has been judged to be a winning entry. UNSW will contact each of the winners via the email address which they provided when completing the Competition entry form. In that email, UNSW Australia will ask the winners to complete a ‘Scholarship Acceptance Form’ which sets out the conditions on which they will be awarded the prize described in these Terms and Conditions. Each winner must complete and return the Scholarship Acceptance Form by email to UNSW Australia by 5.00pm AEST on Monday 1st December to remain eligible to receive her prize.

5.14     By 5pm AEST on Friday 30th October 2015, UNSW Australia will contact each of the five runners-up and inform that them that their entry has been judged to be a runner-up. UNSW will contact each of the runners-up via the email address which they provided when completing the Competition entry form. In that email, UNSW Australia will inform the runners-up that if they meet the condition set out at clause 5.8, they will be offered entry into the “UNSW Science 50:50 program” with access to the benefits and opportunities described in clause 5.2(b) of these Terms and Conditions.  UNSW Australia will also inform the runners-up that they may be eligible to win a monetary prize should any of the 5 winners become ineligible. The runners-up will be asked to complete a ‘Scholarship Acceptance Form’ which sets out the conditions on which they will be awarded a prize, as described in these Terms and Conditions (in particular, clauses 5.2 to 5.8 (inclusive)). Each runner-up must complete and return the Scholarship Acceptance Form by email to UNSW Australia by 5.00pm AEST on Monday 1st December to remain eligible to receive a prize.


6.       Unclaimed prize

In the event that a winner does not comply with the conditions set out in clause 5 of these Terms and Conditions, she forfeits all rights to the prize (or proportion of the prize) and the prize (or proportion of the prize) will be deemed unclaimed. UNSW Australia reserves the right to award the prize to another valid entry judged to be the next best entry by the judging panel.  All of the judging panel’s decisions are final and correspondence will not be entered into. In such circumstances, the new winner will be notified via the email address they specified when completing the Competition entry form.  


7.       Prize Unavailability

7.1       In the event that for whatever reason, a prize described above is unavailable, UNSW Australia reserves the right to substitute for the unavailable prize, a prize of equal or greater value.

7.2       The prize is not transferable or exchangeable.


8. Use of entries by UNSW

8.1.  Each entry remains the property of the Participant who submits it.

8.2       Each entry must be the original work of the Participant submitting the entry and must not be copied from any other person’s work.  By submitting an entry, each Participant warrants that her entry is her original work and she has not copied it from any other person’s work. If an entry uses text or image that is someone else’s work, that use must be with the consent of the owner of the work, and must attribute the author.

8.3       By submitting an entry, each Participant warrants that she has obtained the agreement and consent of each and any person who is identified in, or identifiable in, or from her entry, to submit the entry in the Competition and to UNSW publishing the entry in print or electronic or online media, and for UNSW to use her entry (in whole or in part) as provided for in these Terms and Conditions (including but not limited to clause 8.4). She has obtained a completed and signed Appearance Release Form from each person who is identifiable in her entry and submitted it with her entry.

8.4       By entering the Competition, each Participant consents and agrees to UNSW Australia:

(a)        using, reproducing, communicating, broadcasting, publishing and dealing with her entry (in whole, or in part) for an unlimited period without remuneration, in any media for use in UNSW Australia promotional material; and

(b)        reproducing her entry (in whole, or in part), publishing it online (including on social media) or in any print material, and displaying it at any events organised or supported by UNSW, for the purpose of promoting UNSW and/or the Science Faculty of UNSW Australia.

8.5       Each Participant consents to any act or omission by UNSW Australia that would, in the absence of such consent, infringe the Participant’s moral rights under the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth).


9.  Privacy

9.1       By entering the Competition, each Participant is deemed to have expressly consented to the collection, storage, disclosure and use of their personal information for the purposes identified in these Terms and Conditions in accordance with the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (NSW) and all other applicable privacy legislation.

9.2       UNSW Australia may collect, store and use personal information collected from or in relation to Participants in order to conduct the Competition and for related purposes referred to in paragraph 9.3 below, and may, to conduct the Competition and for the related purposes, disclose such information to third parties including but not limited to UNSW’s 50:50 Program Partners, other Australian universities, agents, contractors, prize suppliers, and, as required, to Australian regulatory authorities.

9.3       By entering the Competition, each Participant acknowledges and agrees that UNSW Australia may, for an indefinite period, unless otherwise requested by the Participant in accordance with clause 9.4, collect, store, disclose and use all personal information collected by UNSW Australia from or in relation to the Participant in connection with this Competition for promotional, marketing and publicity purposes.  All such personal information will only be used and disclosed in accordance with UNSW Australia’s Privacy Management Plan which may be found here: https://www.legal.unsw.edu.au/compliance/privacy/mgtplan.html.

10. Limitation of Liability

10.1. To the maximum extent permitted by law and subject to applicable law, in the case of the intervention of any outside act or event which prevents or significantly hinders UNSW Australia’s ability to proceed with the Competition on the dates and in the manner described in these Terms and Conditions, including but not limited to vandalism, power failures, natural disasters, acts of God, civil unrest, strike, war, act of terrorism, UNSW Australia may in its absolute discretion cancel the Competition at any time and UNSW Australia will have no liability to any Participant or any other person as a result of such cancellation.

10.2     To the maximum extent permitted by law and subject to applicable law,UNSW Australia will not be liable for any misadventure, accident, injury, loss, cost, expense or claim (including but not limited to a claim for infringement of any copyright, trade mark or other intellectual property right, or any claim of a similar nature) that may occur or be sustained in connection with, or as a result of, a Participant’s entry to the Competition.

10.3     UNSW Australia’s rights and obligations under these Terms and Conditions are subject to and limited by all applicable laws and regulations.
